My Mother Hid the Truth Inside Her Old Green Coat

coat lay across her lap.

For a moment, seeing it frightened me.

“Mom, what are you doing?”

“Fixing the lining.”

I sat beside her.

The little opening where she’d hidden the documents was still visible.

She threaded a needle with steady fingers and began closing the seam.

“Are you sure you want to keep it?” I asked.

She considered that.

“Yes,” she said.

“I wore this coat because I thought it was the only way to keep people from seeing what was happening.”

She pulled the thread through the fabric.

“Then it became the place where I kept the truth.”

I watched her finish the final stitch.

She smoothed the fabric and placed the coat on a hanger.

A little later, we went outside to water the flowers on her balcony.

It was cool enough that I reached for my jacket.

Mom passed the coat hanging beside her door.

Her fingers brushed the sleeve.

Then she left it there.

She stepped into the afternoon sunshine carrying a watering can in one hand and the keys to her own apartment in the other.

For months, she’d worn that coat because she was afraid someone would discover the truth.

Now she could decide when to wear it, when to take it off, and who was allowed through her door.

And when I heard the lock turn softly behind us, I realized that the sound no longer meant someone was being kept inside.

It meant my mother had a home where she could finally feel safe.
