He Brought His Mistress Home While I Was Still Healing

had created three trusts before his death: Halcyon, Aster, and Northglass.

Together, they held most of the assets he left me.

Halcyon had provided the original seed capital for Daniel’s firm eight years earlier.

Daniel told everyone the money came from private investors.

Technically, that was true.

He just never asked who the investor was.

Halcyon still owned forty-eight percent of Mercer’s voting shares and held a secured note tied to the company’s principal credit facility.

The notification showed someone attempting to access archived authorization records connected to a $1.8 million vendor transfer.

The login originated from Daniel’s office credentials.

I pulled the records.

Then I found emails.

Vanessa had been communicating with an outside shell company called VCL Strategic Holdings.

VCL had submitted invoices to Daniel’s firm for consulting services that appeared never to have been performed.

The invoices totaled just under $940,000 over fourteen months.

The shell company’s registered contact address belonged to Vanessa’s brother.

I had spent Tuesday and Wednesday quietly forwarding copies to Rachel and to an independent forensic accountant.

I had not confronted Daniel because I did not yet know whether he was involved.

His reaction when I mentioned the emails answered part of that question.

“What did you do?” he asked after reading my face.

“I protected my property.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means Halcyon sent the board a preservation notice regarding financial records this afternoon.”

Vanessa froze.

Daniel looked at her.

That was when I knew he had not understood the full scheme.

“What financial records?” Vanessa asked.

I met her eyes.

“The ones you tried to delete Tuesday night.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“Vanessa?”

She shook her head immediately.

“She’s bluffing.”

“Am I?”

I named the date and time of one authorization.

Then I named VCL Strategic Holdings.

Vanessa’s face went pale.

Daniel stared at her.

“What is VCL?”

“Nothing.”

“Why does Mara know about it?”

“Because she’s trying to scare you.”

I almost laughed.

The doorbell rang.

Rachel stood outside beside a locksmith and Marcus Shaw, the supervisor from the private security company that managed my property.

Rachel entered, gave Lily a brief concerned glance, then faced Daniel.

“Mr.

Mercer, you’ve been formally notified that your permission to occupy this residence has been revoked.

You may remove essential personal belongings tonight under supervision.

Remaining items can be collected by appointment.”

Daniel scoffed.

“I’m her husband.”

“For the moment,” Rachel said.

“That does not place your name on separately titled property.

Your prenuptial agreement explicitly preserves Mara’s premarital real estate.”

“I signed that ten years ago.”

“And it remains valid.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You’re enjoying this.”

That accusation surprised me.

“No,” I said.

“I’m exhausted.

I’m bleeding.

I have a daughter to feed in twenty minutes.

There is nothing enjoyable about discovering my husband brought his affair partner into my home while someone may also have been stealing from a company my family’s money helped create.”

His phone began vibrating.

He looked down.

Another call arrived before the first stopped.

Then a message.

Then another.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“The board called an emergency meeting.”

Rachel said nothing.

“What did you do to the company?” he asked me.

“Nothing yet.”

That answer frightened him.

He packed one suitcase under Marcus’s supervision.

Vanessa left first.

She did not say goodbye to Daniel.
